So take a look at our Super Bowl Preview Show. We discussed some matchups for the game, some x-factors, a little bit of everything. I also had the privilege of interviewing the NFL Insider from the Washington Post, Mark Maske. It was a really good interview. He is an extremely knowledge guy and knows his stuff. He provided some insight into the Redskins, Raiders, Dolphins/Cowboys trade, and of course, the Super Bowl. In my opinion, one of the better interviews we’ve had because of his knowledge and the timing of the interview with the SB right around the corner.
I don’t know how many people heard this, but one of Mark’s fellow columnists from the Washington Post, Michael Wilbon was hospitalized on Monday for a minor heart attack. I’m no doctor, so I can’t explain what happened to you. I needed my brother to explain it to me, but all I know is that Wilbon is one of the best sports personalities there is. He wrote a column today about it, I would take a look. Actually, I would try to make it a daily habit to read his stuff because he is as good as it comes.
Anyway, I want to get to my top 5 college basketball games of Saturday, but first, I want to say that thank god the Mets signed Johan Santana. They needed to because because Erik would have been very unhappy if they didn’t sign him. And because of the reasons I stated yesterday. Now the clock is ticking on the Bedard trade…
Now, here are my top 5 games to for Saturday’s college basketball slate:
5) RESPECT THE A-10
Dayton @ Rhode Island
Before the start of the conference schedule, people thought the A-10 would definitely get four teams in the tournament. Well in our boy, Joe Lunardi’s, latest Bracketology, the A-10 has five teams getting in, including these two. Back on January 9th, the Flyers beat the Rams at home 92-83, but dropped their next three games. If Dayton can’t get this one on the road, they’re looking at a 3-4 conference record and are in serious danger of falling onto the NCAA Bubble… a place no team likes to be. This game features two teams with five wins over Big East schools. Dayton beat Pitt at home and Louisville on the road and URI beat Syracuse and South Florida on the road and Providence at home. These two teams, as you might know, are not a joke.
My Pick – Rhode Island
4) SEC SUPREMACY
#8 Tennessee @ #25 Mississippi State
7pm ESPN Full Court/ESPN 360
This game features the leader in the SEC East, Tennessee, and the leader in the SEC West, Mississippi State. One team, Tennessee seemed to right itself after falling at Kentucky, and the other team, MSU let down against Arkansas after a big win against in-state rival Mississippi a couple days earlier. The Volunteers find themselves in a tight race for the SEC East crown with Florida and Vanderbilt that will likely come down to the final week of the season. With the Gators coming into town Tuesday, the Volunteers need to find a way to pull one out in Starkville. But Mississippi State is no pushover.
My Pick – Mississippi State
3) UPSET ALERT – Fear the Bears?
Baylor @ #10 Texas
1:45, ESPN Full Court/ESPN 360
Is Baylor really as good as people say they are? Well, they might be. They have good out of conference wins at Notre Dame and South Carolina and they just picked up a marquee road win against then #16 Texas A&M. They face another tough road game against the Longhorns who have only lost one game at home including an impressive victory over Tennessee. Texas has also won at UCLA, so if Baylor can pull of a win in Austin, they are virtually a lock for the NCAA tourney and one the best stories in college basketball.
My Pick – Baylor
2) CATS AND DOGS
#21 Pittsburgh @ Connecticut
Is there any hotter team in the nation than the Huskies? People forgot about Connecticut after last years mediocre season, but the Huskies are for real. Pittsburgh has been very inconsistent this year after Levance Fields and Mike Cook went down early this year. Fields is expected back for the postseason, but the Panthers can’t cake walk until then playing in the toughest and deepest conference in the nation. The winner of this game might be the second best team in the conference behind Georgetown.
My Pick – Connecticutt
1) GAME OF THE WEEK – GIVE ME SOME LOVE
Arizona @ #5 UCLA
If you haven’t seen Kevin Love play, then you are really missing out on seeing the best big man in the nation. He averages a double-double and has a great low post presence on both ends of the court. But the Wildcats have another one of Dickie V’s “diaper dandy’s” on the other end of the court, in Jared Bayless. Bayless is the third leading scorer in the Pac-10, but his Wildcats have lost six straight to the Bruins. This is the first meeting between the teams with the freshman sensations which is bound to be a good one. UCLA can’t afford to give up more ground if they want a number one seed in the NCAA tournament.
My Pick – UCLA
Honorable Mention Games:
Oklahoma @ #23 Texas A&M, 4pm ESPN Full Court/ESPN 360
#19 Florida @ Arkansas, 3:05pm ESPN Full Court/ESPN 360
#14 Stanford @ #9 Washington State, 3pm FSN
