Saturday’s (2/9) Five Games to Watch

37 days until Selection Sunday….

5) Give it your best shot

baylor.gif Baylor @ #5 kansas.gif Kansas

8pm ESPN Full Court/ESPN 360

People really jumped on Baylor’s bandwagon and this make me really angry because Baylor will get into the tournament just because they are a “great” story. People act like they’re a lock, but to me they’re not. A win at Kansas would really help especially because this is the only meeting between the two teams. Until the Bears get that standout victory, they could be a victim of their soft schedule (63 in the nation).

My Winner – Kansas

4) Round Two

purdue.gif Purdue @ #8 wisconsin.gif Wisconsin

9pm

I’ll best honest. I think the two best teams in the Big Ten are Wisconsin and Indiana and that game intrigues me more, but the standings say differently. A 9-1, yes a 9-1, Purdue team heads into Madison looking to knock off the Badgers and get sole possession of first place in the Big Ten. The Boilermakers shocked Big Ten nation with a 60-56 win over Wisconsin two weeks ago, and the Badgers look to return the favor at home. Two wins over Wisconsin will really put Purdue in the drivers seat for the conference title and a bubble team at the start of the conference slate will virtually be a lock come selection sunday.

My Winner – Wisconsin

3) They’re back

4pm, ESPN/ESPN 360

After Wednesday’s win at rival Syracuse, Connecticut forward Jeff Adrien summarized the Huskies recent play pretty darn well, “”UConn is back! UConn is back on the map!” Well Jeff, you guys are definitely back. UConn is the hottest team in the nation reeling off six straight wins. They host a Georgia Tech team that needs not only a marquee win for the NCAA Tournament, but wins in general. Let’s not forget that this Yellow Jackets team has the potential to compete against good teams. They played Kansas, UNC and Maryland really close, but those games were in Atlanta and this one is in Storrs.

My Winner – Connecticut

2) UPSET ALERT –

usc.gifUSC @ #17 wash-state-u.gif Washington State

3:30pm, ABC/ESPN 360

When these two teams played earlier this season, Washington State was 13-0 and ranked #4 in the nation. They went on to beat USC in Los Angeles, but since then the Cougars have lost 5 of their last 9 games including the last three. That loss to Washington State capped off a three game losing streak to start the conference schedule, but since then the Trojans have won 6 of 7 including an impressive victory at UCLA. Obviously, these two teams are heading in opposite directions. It’ll be tough for the red hot Trojans to win in Pullman, but it can still be done against an overrated Cougar squad.

My Winner – USC

1) GAME OF THE WEEK – Who’s Second?

#6 georgetown.gif Georgetown @ louisville.gif Louisville

9pm, ESPN/ESPN 360

The Hoyas are clearly the best team in the Big East. But who’s second? Notre Dame and Connecticut both had their shots in Washington, but neither could come out on top. Well, the Irish really didn’t even come close. At the start of the season many people thought Louisville could win the Big East and be a national championship contender. But since then, the Cardinals roller coaster fell fast before picking back up in conference play. At 7-3, a win over Georgetown would put Louisville back in contention for the Big East title and end the talk of this team riding on the bubble. The Hoyas haven’t blown any of the top Big East teams away (except ND) squeaking out wins against UConn, Syracuse and West Virginia. Georgetown has shown vulnerability, but can the Cardinals take advantage of that at Freedom Hall?

My Winner – Louisville

Honorable Mention Game:

#16 Marquette @ #21 Notre Dame, 12pm ESPN/ESPN 360 – Only game this weekend between two ranked teams

My Winner – Notre Dame

Enjoy
