What a national championship game. I think this one game made up for some of the other poor games in the Elite 8 and Final Four. The game was back and forth… Kansas was in control one moment, but then Memphis was in control a minute later. The Tigers were undoubtedly doomed by their poor free throw shooting. Chris Douglas-Roberts missed three and Derrick Rose missed one and then Kansas did a phenomenal job capitalizing. To me, the play that gave the Jayhawks hope was when Sharron Collins stole the Memphis inbounds pass and went on to hit a big three-pointer from the corner to cut the deficit to four points. From there, the momentum swung back to the Jayhawks one last time.
I don’t think Memphis lost the game because they didn’t foul at the end. I think a foul could have made up for the fact that they can’t hit free throws, but the REASON they lost was simply because they choked from the line. I don’t care if the Tigers could hit free throws during the whole tournament. They showed no capability to hit free throws as a team all season, so why should I be surprised that they missed four huge free throws down the stretch in the national championship game. I wasn’t surprised and neither should you. This is a bad free throw shooting team and it shows when the national championship was on the line.
